New user problems in gettng RTL-SDR to work

I started using my RTL-SDR 4 dongle with SDRsharp a couple of days ago. However, I am now having problems. I must admit that I tried using a Funcube dongle with the same settings in SDRsharp, and things seemed to be fine. However, today I tried to use the RTL-SDR dongle again and am running into serious problems. I keep getting the “No device selected” message. I deleted my SDRsharp directory and started over. I redid the Zadig operation, reinstalled SDRsharp, but I am still getting the “No d … “ message. I get the ding from the computer when I plug in the device and the settings seem okay (and yes, I selected the proper RTL- SDR) but I keep getting the ‘No device … ‘ message. Any ideas on what to look at now? Is it possible the dongle failed?

Any suggestions on further trouble-shooting steps?

TIA,

Bill

The main thing to check with this type of problem is the physical connection.

Try other USB ports, and try eliminating USB cables for now. If the RTL-SDR can’t get enough power, it can disconnect.

Also when you reinstalled, double check that you did the steps with install-rtlsdr.bat which downloads the rtlsdr.dll file.

If it’s still failing to connect, try another computer if posisble to confirm if it’s the PC or dongle. If it ends up being that the dongle is failing email us at admin@rtl-sdr.com with your order details for a warranty replacement.

Carl, thank you very much for your reply. I did finally get things installed on another machine and it works! I don’t understand except that perhaps in the fiddling with USB ports on the first machine, the USB ports are no longer supplying the needed power. The “new” machine is using the same powered hub as the first one (works in the machine’s USB port as well). But now that I have a solution that works, I am happy, but I simply have a problem believing that USB power was the problem on the first machine. I will keep playing with that, but not your problem.

Again, thanks for your help!
